Kīlauea, Hawaii
Lava samples, for chemical analyses, are collected nearly each week using little more than a rock hammer and a bucket of water. The molten lava, when collected, is about 1150 oC (2100 oF) and instantly boils air-temperature water. Images and text from the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory website.
